Get Your Foot Off the Brakes
Jun 30, 2024
Humans are unique in their ability to dwell on the past, often replaying old pains and grievances that keep them from fully experiencing the present. This tendency not only drains our energy but also hinders our ability to build and maintain healthy relationships. It's like driving with one foot on the gas and the other on the brakes—a surefire recipe for frustration and stagnation.
FRICTION
During a recent coaching call in the Wanted Man Mentorship Program, a member posed a critical question: "How do I let go of my emotional past?" This question strikes at the heart of what it means to live a fulfilled life and have a healthy relationship. Clinging to the past creates friction in our lives, preventing us from moving forward and experiencing new joys and connections.
Imagine you're embarking on a long drive, eager to reach an exciting destination. But instead of pressing the accelerator and enjoying the journey, you keep your other foot on the brake. Not only does this slow you down, but it also causes unnecessary wear and tear on your vehicle. Similarly, when you live in the past, you create emotional and psychological friction that wears you down and keeps you from moving forward in life.
One powerful way to overcome this friction and start living in the present is through something I teach called the "Feeling Body." This concept involves becoming deeply attuned to the present moment and your current emotions, rather than being held captive by past experiences. When I discovered how to tap into my Feeling Body, my life and my relationship with my wife improved exponentially.
Living in the present allows you to experience being loved, cherished, valued, and admired by your partner. It transforms your interactions and deepens your connections, providing a fresh perspective that is not clouded by past grievances. This shift is crucial for those who want to revitalize their relationships and enjoy the richness of life unfettered by past burdens.
